Talking about talktalk

Sunday, August 17, 2008
So things have been busy here at the end of the summer. Some cool new releases coming out on earSnake and working on some new Gemini Wolf music.

I've really been focusing on my Philadelphia Fringe Festival piece, talktalk. I'm really excited about this work and think it's going to really be something special. It combines all my favorite aspects of sound, improvisation, crowd interaction and laptop trickery.

The basic concept of the piece is recording the ambient conversations and noises from a cafe, slicing the sounds up, processing them on the laptop and replaying them, almost instantly as music concrete. So prior to the performance, I'm going to hang 8-10 microphones from the ceiling, on tables and contact microphones through out The Rocket Cat Cafe.

It's going to be interesting to see to what extent the people at the Rocket Cat will consciously try and shape the sound of the performance. I'm hoping that it morphs and is different every night. Some nights, I imagine, people will kind of ignore the sounds I'm making, and just carry on their conversations. Perhaps other nights, people will shout and sing and make noises on the microphones to try and shape the musical output.

The performances details are:

Tuesday September 2, Thursday September 4, Thursday September 11 and Friday September 12. All performances at 8:00 PM. The Rocket Cat Cafe. 2001 Frankford Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125. Cost $5

As a preview for the piece I'll be performing Monday August 25 at the Balcony at Trocadaro for a Fringe Festival Showcase night.

For this I'll probably setup two microphone and do some live processing making music from the balcony crowd.
