New series invites performance artists to interpret work of visual artists

( Philadelphia) PARAPHRASE/NEXUS is a new series in which artists of various disciplines and media create performances inspired by exhibitions at Nexus Gallery. The series is curated by Bilwa, and its inaugural performance will take place on Saturday, April 28 at 8p.m. and will feature Perpetual Mvmt<>Snd in an improvised dance and music installation interpreting Yukie Kobayashi and Elsabé Dixon’s collaborative show, Kumo Cloud Wolk, and Matthew Pruden’s Magnetic Sleep.

On April 28, Dancer/choreographer Emily Sweeney and electronic musician Mikronesia will perform their exploration of Kumo Cloud Wolk. An installation of handmade paper and silk weavings, Kumo Cloud Wolk is inspired by the ways in which the processes of papermaking and silkworms’ weaving are similar to the formation and lifespan of clouds. Dancer/choreographer Rebecca Patek and electronic musician Bilwa will offer their interpretation of Matthew Pruden’s Magnetic Sleep, a multimedia piece exploring 19th century spirit photography, parapsychology, and Spiritualism – the belief that the human personality continues on after death and can communicate through the agency of a “medium.” Perpetual Mvmt<>Snd is a Philadelphia-based interdisciplinary performance collective dedicated to exploring the intersection of various artistic media, the way these media inform and inspire one another in a perpetual loop, and th e way this intersection creates something that is greater than movement or sound on its own.

The second installment of PARAPHRASE/NEXUS will be Saturday, May 26 at 8p.m. and will feature Philadelphia dancer/choreographers Christina Zani and Devynn Emory investigating select photographs from The Philadelphia Center for the Photographic Image’s annual PhotoImage ’07 competition. PARAPHRASE/NEXUS will then take a three-month hiatus and resume in September.

All performances are free and will be held at Nexus Gallery in the Crane Arts Building at 1400 N. American St., Suite #102.
