Release the Kraken (The Day After)
Sunday, April 30, 2006
Soooo, we had a really nice write up, Pick of the Week in the Philly City Paper, so I was really excited for this month's Release the Kraken... then on Friday I got a call from Plunkit in Calif., that Medusa had double booked the night! After some going back and forth we decieded to do a condensed Release show and cut out around 11:00. After speaking with the owner and Plunkit out at Coachella, I found out that Medusa had booked a 40 person birthday party and 15 person bachleroette party on our night of live experimental electronics. They had specifically request these two DJs who spin at Medusa on the first and third saturdays. I assumed if these guys were cool, we could mix everything up and keep everybody dancing and the vibes good and try and work each other on this massive mix up (read screw-up) of double booking the night and major communication breakdown between Medusa, Plunkit and myself. (For future reference Release the Kraken will be on the *FOURTH* Saturday of the month, not the *LAST* Saturday of the month. April had five Saturday's so you can see how and why there was a problem. The first I head of any of these was the day before the show.)
So the early part of the night was bananas. I DJed some cuts early in the night as people came in from around 9-10 (not so bananas)... At 10 r_garcia and recompas hit the stage (much more bananas). I knew from their sound check they were going to blow the place out and they did. Mixing up live looped guitars, bass, saxophone (played through a telephone), theremin, melodica, vocals, oscillators, synths, laptops, fx boxes, live drums into a nasty stew of funk, noise, electronics, jazz and dub these *TWO* guys from Atlanta were awesome. We had planned on having r_garcia vs. recompas jam out for about hour, then have Jalima Shani and I come up and do some versions of her tracks for a short hip-hop set.
As the club filled up from the parties people seem to be having a good time. Around 10:30 the two other DJs came in, they were being very adamant about getting on at 11:00 an started to set their stuff up. Around 10:50, Jalima got up and did three very powerful performaces while Randy created some realtime loops with bass, guitar and drums (WHAT?!). The two party DJs set their stuff up and pushed their DJ setup onto where Randy's gear was setup and went into their set.
Sooooo anyone who came after 11:00 (usually when we get things started at the Kraken shows) were probably confused to hear 90s hip-hop and R&B and a room full of people celebrating a birthday and bachelorette party.
Sorry for the confusion and to those folks that came late and didn't get to see any of the live electronic music we had this month.
So the next Release the Kraken is May 28. We'll have details soon.
